There's been some discussion around these parts lately that we are in the midst of a horror-movie renaissance, with titles like The Babadook, The Witch, Raw, and Hereditary, just to name a few, making a strong case that the genre has been revitalized in recent years. Now you can add another new film to that list: The Endless, which dropped a new and eerie trailer today.

The Endless is written and directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, who also star as two brothers who receive a mysterious video message from a member of the UFO suicide cult they broke away from 10 years earlier. Returning to the cult's remote encampment, one brother is slowly drawn back into the group while the other resists — all while bizarre phenomena begin to happen around them, heralding the arrival of a major and possibly reality-changing event.

If the names of the filmmakers sound familiar to horror devotees reading this, that's because their previous film was the excellent Spring (2015), an acclaimed love story between a human male and a 2,000-year-old female mutant. Before that, they brought us Resolution (2012), an unsettling horror tale that also served as a semi-prequel to The Endless.

The Endless premiered at last year's Tribeca Film Festival and has been gathering buzz at other festivals since. We caught it at the AFI Fest in Los Angeles last November and, while its ambitions occasionally exceed its relatively modest resources, it's still a gripping, creepy, and original blend of Lovecraftian horror and religious cult thriller.

The movie opens on April 6 in New York and April 13 in Los Angeles, with a national expansion to follow. Watch the trailer above and see if you think we have another new horror gem on the way.
