No, Fox’s The Orville is not Star Trek or Galaxy Quest. The show is its own creature entirely, according to the cast. Created by Family Guy funny man Seth MacFarlane, it follows the crew of the Orville on their five-year mission to explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and — whoops, wrong script.

Okay, so there’s a lot of Gene Roddenberry's DNA in The Orville, but the people behind the series assure fans that the likenesses to Captain Kirk & Co. are merely homages that are just a small part of a greater and original "mass," delivering something different each week in dramedy form.

The Orville dares to turn the old into something new and go where (dare we say it) no show has gone before. We sat down with some of the cast at New York Comic Con to discuss the show's unique niche.
