This fall, it's Predator season at the box office! It's been eight years since the fearsome alien hunters meanced the big screen in Predators, but they're making a comeback in director Shane Black's The Predator.
It's extremely refreshing to see that Black isn't ignoring the previous Predator movies with his new sequel, especially since he was actually in the first Predator opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger. Black even did an uncredited rewrite for that movie before returning to the franchise decades later for the newest installment.
Fortunately, the mythology of the Predator films isn't too dense, and fans don't necessarily have to see every movie before catching the new one. However, if you simply want to get up to speed, SYFY WIRE is going to break down everything you need to know about the Predator franchise in two minutes or less.
To start things out, we look back at the man originally cast to play the Predator: Jean-Claude Van Damme! It's true, we almost had an onscreen clash of Van Damme and Schwarzenegger in 1987. Then in 1990, Predator 2 may have kicked off a cinematic universe before we even knew how to define it.
Shockingly, there was nearly 14-year gap between Predator movies, and the hunt was moved to the comic book realm for the better part of a decade as a series of crossovers helped Predator stay relevant. The Aliens vs. Predator comics even paved the way for two movies before the Predators once again had a film to call their own.
