Fans are still waiting for a black actor (or actress) to take the reins of the TARDIS, but Freema Agyeman's Martha Jones gave us a pretty good indication of how great it will be when that day eventually comes.
In honor of Black History Month, we're doing an initiative we call "28 Days. 28 Heroes." Over each day this month, we'll look back at some of the coolest black heroes in all of sci-fi — and there's no better place to start celebrating than with Doctor Who's Martha. Looking back on the lore of Doctor Who, she was one of the most capable companions ever to run with the mad man in a blue box. Not to mention the fact that Shakespeare loves her and she managed to save the day more than a few times all her own. Oh, and she totally stole the show on Torchwood, too.
Martha was a role model for young girls looking to find a reflection of a female hero in sci-fi, and as we wait to see who will take over as the 13th Doctor, we can take solace in the fact that she is still out there kicking butt, saving lives and protecting us from alien threats.
