With the series premiering at the end of the month, we caught up with the cast of Starz’s American Gods to talk about what fans can expect from the ambitious Neil Gaiman adaptation.

Stars Ian McShane (Mr. Wednesday) and Ricky Whittle (Shadow Moon) talked about how they weren’t all that familiar with the material before signing on, but after reading the novel, McShane said he knew it was the perfect template for a series. The two discuss how their characters connect, how their relationship evolves, and how things change as these worlds start to collide as the season progresses.

Whittle discusses Shadow’s awakening as he sees all these fantastical things around him, and tries to discern if he’s crazy or if the world is crazy. They also discuss the reflections between our world, and the intersection of pop culture and religion Gaiman discussed in the original novel, as McShane notes we must respect our history or be doomed to repeat it.

American Gods premieres April 30 on Starz.
