We caught up with the writers of BOOM! Studios’ Misfit City comic to talk about the unique challenges of trying to create what is, essentially, a Goonies for girls. It sounds glorious.

Kiwi Smith and Kurt Lustgarden detailed the project for us, and talked about the young girls wanting to visit the locations featured in the film The Gloomies (ahem), they eventually find a real-life treasure map that catapults them on an adventure that mirrors the events of The Gloomies. It sounds very meta, but with a ton of potential to flip some tropes on their heads.

Smith said the goal was to tell a story about a group of young women going on an adventure to prove they can be heroes in their own right. Misfit City is scheduled as a four-issue run to kick things off, with potential for more arcs if the series lands. Considering the deep dark secrets buried in their town, it sounds like there will be more than enough adventures to come.
