On Monday, December 3, Sony is jumping into the retro console craze with PlayStation Classic. If it reminds you of the NES Classic and SNES Classic, it’s definitely not a coincidence. It’s been 24 years since the original PlayStation came out, and that’s like 3 PlayStations ago! But back in 1994, the PlayStation was truly revolutionary. And it ushered in a new era of 3D graphics and gameplay.
SYFY WIRE was given a chance to test out the PlayStation Classic ahead of the official release, so we created an unboxing video to show everyone what to expect. Would be it wrong to call the tiny PlayStation cute? Because it really is, and we’d buy it just for the aesthetic value alone!
PlayStation Classic comes preloaded with 20 games, including Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil: Director's Cut, Final Fantasy VII, Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee, Grand Theft Auto, and Rayman. Those titles are legitimately among the best games of the era. Although there are a few games on here that we can’t quite remember playing, including Intelligent Qube, Jumping Flash!, and Mr. Driller.
Once we finally got the PlayStation Classic out of the box, we couldn’t resist taking it for a test drive in a few rounds of Tekken 3. In the modern era, we’re already up to Tekken 7, but Tekken 3 is still a lot of fun. Even button mashers like us can still have a blast with a fighter like this.
