The Nun! Captain Marvel! PS4’s Spider-Man! We’re back for another video edition of Who Won the Week, and guess what we’re going to talk about? SYFY WIRE’s Jackie Jennings and contributing editor Dany Roth are back to share what genre properties won the week of Sept. 3-7.
The first item on the list is director Corin Hardy’s The Nun, which managed to scare up more than $53 million in domestic box-office revenue over the weekend. The movie is the latest installment in James Wan’s The Conjuring cinematic universe, and Dany got the chance to attend the premiere in Mexico, describing it as a “Hammer horror movie, plus with a little bit of Evil Dead” that acts as a prequel of sorts to The Conjuring (the super-scary character of the Nun was introduced in 2016’s The Conjuring 2).
Also winning, Marvel’s Spider-Man finally swung into stores everywhere on Friday, and Insomniac’s new open-world game generally received positive reviews, despite having some repetitive bits. But hey, nothing beats swinging around Manhattan as your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
Last but not least is Oscar winner Brie Larson’s marvelous Entertainment Weekly cover as Captain Marvel. The magazine issue also offered us a first look at the Skrulls and some stills from the movie, as well as more info about Marvel’s upcoming superhero film out on March 8, 2019.
