WATCH: Why Rey from Star Wars is no Mary Sue

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the "Rey is a Mary Sue" argument burst out of 2015 following The Force Awakens and into the present day upon the release of The Last Jedi. It's a tale as old as time, really (or, at least, it feels that way) — girl shows up in Star Wars, girl ruins Star Wars, and there's a great disturbance in the Force as if millions of fanboys' voices cried out "Well, actually" and were never silenced. They just keep going.

Of course, we heartily disagree with their assessment (as does, for the record, Daisy Ridley). In fact, we seem to recall another character from a sandy planet who was quite strong with the Force with minimal training.

Fangrrls commander Cher Martinetti debunks the Mary Sue notion in Actually, Actually.
