We caught up with young adult novelist Cecil Castellucci who is writing the ongoing Young Animal comic, Shade: The Changing Girl with artist Marley Zarcone. Castellucci also has a new period piece graphic novel with artist Jose Pimienta called Soupy Leaves Home that will hit comic shops on April 19 and book stands May 2. Also, last year the YA author joined the Star Wars extended universe with her Princess Leia novel Moving Target.

Castellucci chatted about her small role in the legacy of Princess Leia, and how the tragic passing of Carrie Fisher affected her. She touched on what it was like to tell her own story in the Star Wars canon. We also chatted with Castellucci about Shade, The Changing Girl, which features an alien with the power of madness who sets up shop in the body of a teenage girl. The first story arc is complete and Castellucci shares what's in store for the second story arc and beyond. Coming from a family of scientists, she said she’s enjoyed finding the logic in the wild fantasy story and sprinkling in little pieces of scientific accuracy around the fantastical. Shade the Changing Girl is unlike any comic book reading experience you've had so far, and is poised to be one of the memorable launches of the year.

Check out all of the projects Castellucci is working on in the interview below.
