Before watching Elysium, count the 28 cinema sins of District 9

The alien-themed docudrama was a real shot in the arm for science fiction movies, but it's far from perfect.

District 9 is possibly one of the most realistic depictions of alien life on Earth ever. We're not trying to come down on Alien Nation by any means, we just don't think life would be so suburban and integrated for extraterrestrials. The idea of alien apartheid, however is refreshingly honest, even if it's depressing.

But the film has its problems. There are plot contrivances galore in order to reach that sociopolitical message the move strives so hard for.

Still, all in all, District 9 is way less guilty than most science fiction. That doesn't mean it's any less fun to mock it. And stick around for the end. The nods to a few other movies at the last second are probably the best part.
