The British supernatural thriller, Don't Look Now, is one of those often-overlooked gems that people bring up during intense dinnertime discussions on neglected movies that deserve more acclaim.
Released in 1973 and directed by The Man Who Fell To Earth's Nicolas Roeg, it centers around grieving parents, played by Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie, who begin to see visions of their dead daughter in a red raincoat scampering through the streets of Venice. Most remember the film for its steamy lovemaking scene, though.
New Orleans-based Waxwork Records, producers of finely-remastered premium vinyl editions of some of our absolute favorite geek flicks like The Thing and Creepshow, has just released a deluxe record set showcasing the exceptionally unsettling score by Italian composer Pino Donaggio, accented with gorgeous new cover and gatefold art.
Donaggio wrote the riveting music for other creepy classics like The Howling and DePalma's Carrie, Body Double, and Dressed To Kill, as well as Piranha, and Seed of Chucky.
Here's the official press release:
Waxwork Records proudly presents the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack vinyl to the 1973 British-Italian Thriller, DON’T LOOK NOW. Directed by Nicolas Roeg and featuring Pino Donaggio’s very first effort as a film music composer, Don’t Look Now tells the story of a married couple (Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie) who travel to Venice, Italy for work following the recent accidental drowning-death of their daughter. The couple encounter two sisters, one of whom claims to be clairvoyant and informs them that their daughter is attempting to contact them to warn them of danger. The classic film dives deep and focuses on the psychology of grief and its effect on relationships while blending elements of the supernatural with vivid, impressionist imagery of flashbacks, colors, patterns, and editing techniques that have been known to alter even the viewer’s perception of what is actually occurring.
Waxwork Records is beyond excited to present the complete score by Pino Donaggio on deluxe 180 gram vinyl with high quality packaging. Features include 180 gram “Red Raincoat” colored vinyl, old style tip-on gatefold jackets, printed inserts, and all new artwork by Jessica Seamans of Landland.
"We love the classic Don't Look Now score by Pino Donaggio," said Waxwork CEO Kevin Bergeron. "The score marks his segue into the world of composing for film, and we're glad he made that jump. Donaggio has brought us so many classics such as the scores to Carrie, Tourist Trap, and The Howling. And the movie itself. What a stylistic, smart, and immersive slab of 1970s British thriller cinema. And how about that sex scene!"
Don't Look Now's original theatrical score is available on premium vinyl for $28 starting Sept. 8 at Waxwork Records' site.
