Creepshow, the cult-classic 1982 anthology horror flick from director George A. Romero and the twisted mind of Stephen King, is a certified Halloween staple and captures the spirit of the old EC horror comics like The Haunt of Fear,Tales From the Crypt, and The Vault of Horror.
Striking the perfect chord between laughs and lunacy, Creepshow was a huge hit that November, with a killer cast including Ed Harris, Ted Danson, Leslie Nielson, Hal Holbrook, Adrienne Barbeau, E.G. Marshall and even King himself!
Five years later, in 1987, Creepshow 2 was released with mixed results and only three chapters this time instead of five. The sequel was capably directed by Creepshow's cinematographer, Michael Gornick. Romero was still involved, this time as the screenwriter, with its trio of terrifying tales, The Raft, Old Chief Woodenhead, and The Hitchhiker, again adapted from the weird works of Stephen King.
But what I remember most about it was the diverse and demented music!
To honor the 30th anniversary of Creepshow 2, New Orleans-based Waxwork Records is releasing a deluxe new vinyl set of the original remastered score by British composer Les Reed and Rick Wakeman, former keyboardist for the band Yes, on Friday, August 4.
This marks the first time the soundtrack has been offered in any form and the 2-LP, 180-gram colored vinyl comes packaged in some ultra-cool vintage cover and gatefold artwork by Ghoulish Gary Pullin, with a built-in booklet page with liner notes and illustrations.
Waxwork is offering three colored variants, “The Raft" (Coke Bottle Clear & Black Blob Vinyl) and “Old Chief Woodenhead” (Metallic Golden Brown & Deep Teal Swirl). A “Hitchhiker” subscriber variant (Yellow and Red Starburst) is the third option.
Here's the stirring soundtrack's description:
The score, co-composed and performed by Les Reed and Rick Wakeman, features a mix of both classic, orchestral compositions and electronic, synth cues. After a lengthy search of the original masters, Waxwork Records was able to work directly with composers Les Reed and Rick Wakeman to acquire the original source material and re-master for vinyl.
"CREEPSHOW 2 holds a very special place in Waxwork’s heart," Founder Kevin Bergeron told Syfy Wire. "We all grew up loving George Romero, Stephen King, and all things 80's horror. Something about the Creepshow films resonated with an entire generation of horror fans. It just stuck, and both films hold up today. My personal favorite episode from CREEPSHOW 2 is “The Raft”, and we pressed up one of our CREEPSHOW 2 vinyl variants to resemble lake water with a deadly black blob floating in it. It’s gonna hit you right in the nostalgic feels!"
I have a sneaking suspicion these premium albums are going to vanish faster than you can say "Thanks for the ride, Lady" so if you want one for your growing collection, visit Waxwork Records and snag one for yourself starting tomorrow.
