One of the big questions hanging over the past season of Doctor Who was whether Jenna Coleman would be back for another year. Now we finally have our answer.
Spoilers ahead for the Doctor Who Christmas special!
The annual Doctor Who holiday episode, “Last Christmas," kept the answer up in the air right up until the final moments Thursday night, and even tossed in a massive fakeout, but the episode ended with the Doctor and Clara finally back on good terms and headed off for more adventures in the TARDIS.
Here’s what Coleman told the BBC about her return next season, and judging by her careful use of phrases like not wanting to leave her arc “unresolved,” it sounds like next year could potentially be her last:
“It's wonderful. I get a whole other series of stories with the Doctor and I couldn't walk away with the story being unresolved. There is so much more to do. I think they've finally just reached a point where they really understand each other.
The arrival of the 12th Doctor has just kind of dropped this whole bombshell and allowed the dynamic to totally change, so I think just when Clara was feeling more comfortable in the relationship, it has suddenly thrown something new up.”
Clara’s story has easily been one of the most ambitious for a companion in the series’ history, with her learning more about how the the Doctor’s mind works — and even being forced to channel her own inner Doctor (for better or worse) on more than one occasion. Some fans have been a bit divided on the results, but, if nothing else, Clara’s evolution definitely opens up a lot of new territory to mine.
Judging by the Christmas finale, the Doctor/Clara dynamic is essentially hitting the reset button, but that doesn’t erase the mountain of baggage they’ve been through. One more season (potentially) sounds like the perfect swan song.
What do you think? Are you glad to hear Coleman will be back?
