Wife-and-husband team Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan developed Westworld for HBO as producers and writers. Nolan directed two episodes in Season 1, “The Original” and the stunning “The Bicameral Mind.” Now it’s Joy’s turn in the director’s chair — and there will be blood.

As Joy told TV Line, she is directing the fourth episode in Season 2, an episode written by her husband and Westworld staff writer Gina Atwater. Nolan said, “You made it far more violent and disturbing than we ever intended. It was quite a placid episode, and Lisa has kind of turned it into a bloodbath."

When last we left Westworld, the hosts were becoming self-aware. And they’re obviously mad as hell about their enslavement for the last 35 years. In one of the final shots, we see them advancing on a party of humans. I expect violent ends.

But as Joy will be directing the fourth episode, and not the follow-up to Season 1’s finale, perhaps Nolan is referring to completely different violent delight. Egads.

Joy and Nolan also said that Season 2 will be different from the first season, as the show was originally about the robot awakening. Now "the park will be in a different place."

This will be Joy’s second time in the director’s chair, after a one-off for Person of Interest. Joy also wrote scripts for the sadly-gone-but-not-forgotten Pushing Daisies. Both Nolan and Joy were nominated for Emmys for "outstanding writing for a drama series" but lost to Chris Miller for The Handmaid's Tale.
