The recent sci-fi flick Dawn of the Planet of the Apes featured some of the most amazing visual effects of the year, and here’s how they made those monkeys so frighteningly realistic.

The folks at Weta Digital have created an amazing behind-the-scenes featurette to walk us through all the CGI work, not to mention the insane level of dedication by Andy Serkis to make it all feel so natural and real. It’s amazing to see the perfect balance between acting and technology. Bravo.

Here’s the official description for the clip:

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is set in a post apocalyptic future where a nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar are battling for dominance with a band of human survivors. Emotive themes of family, compassion and betrayal are carried by a cast of fully CG apes who deliver intelligent and emotional performances as believable as their human counterparts.

See how Weta Digital's on-set performance capture helped artists bring the amazing performances the actors delivered on the film set through to the digital characters in the finished picture, and how we created a startling post-virus San Francisco.
