With X-Men: Days of Future Past taking place in two timestreams and involving an extinction-level threat to mutantkind, the question must be asked: who will be left for the next movie?

X-Men: Days of Future Past brings together many members of the cast from the first three films as well as their younger counterparts from X-Men: First Class, as Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) travels backwards in time to warn the youthful X-Men that the Sentinels created by Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage) have created a dark future for their kind -- and that history must be changed.

Whatever changes do occur in the course of the film will undoubtedly have an effect on the future of the X-Men and will set up the players for the next movie, X-Men: Apocalypse. But will that film feature members of both casts as well, or will we only see the First Class cast in the roles going forward? Producer and screenwriter Simon Kinberg was asked about this by Hitfix (via Slashfilm):

"Certainly things that take place in Days of Future Past in the past have an impact on the future. That’s the whole point of the plot and, I can say, in at least the vaguest of terms, there are repercussions from what happens in 1973 that ripple all the way forward in time. Which means they would ripple through the time periods of the original X-Men movies."

Kind of a vague if intriguing answer, in that such a scenario could potentially clear the field for, say, a better version of the "Dark Phoenix" storyline than we got in X-Men: The Last Stand somewhere down the line. But as for the actors who might be involved, Kinberg got more specific with his next remark:

"(Apocalypse) really follows the First Class cast. Meaning it is a sequel that will feature (James) McAvoy, (Michael) Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nic Hoult and that cast. It is not a sequel that would necessarily feature Ian (McKellen), Patrick (Stewart), Halle (Berry) and the original cast. It would take place roughly between the past of Days of Future Past and when X-Men first started."

So, will this be the last we see of the original screen incarnations of Professor X, Magneto, Storm and so on? It seems as if any and all future X-Men movies will follow the First Class actors for as long as they're willing and contracted to play the roles (and we're sure Fox will find a way to work the ever-popular Wolverine in there as well). Are you ready to say goodbye to the classic cast so quickly after they make their return?

X-Men: Days of Future Past opens on May 23.
