If you were hoping for Michael Moorcock or China Mieville, well, the president's reading list doesn't extend quite that far into hardcore fantasy or science fiction, but when you're talking of a novel about strange animals shipwrecked on a lost island—one currently being made into a movie by Ang Lee—hey, we're happy.

Novelist Yann Martel, author of Life of Pi, revealed that he received a piece of fan mail from President Barack Obama, GalleyCat reported.

The president wrote: "My daughter and I just finished reading Life of Pi together. Both of us agreed we prefer the story with animals. It is a lovely book—an elegant proof of God and the power of storytelling."

What other SF or fantasy novels do you think the president should be reading? We'd start off with Paolo Bacigalupi's The Windup Girl. How about you?
