With many of the most acclaimed sci-fi and fantasy shows popping up on cable and pay-cable stations, many fans are turning to the seedy underbelly of the web to keep up on everything from The Walking Dead to Game of Thrones. So which series ranked as most popular to track down by less-than-legal means this year?

Not too surprisingly, it's the series that is among the most acclaimed and hardest to get—Game of Thrones, which airs on the pay cable station HBO. Based on George R.R. Martin's acclaimed A Song of Ice and Fire series, the show has gotten more and more popular with each passing season.

The portal Torrent Freak put together a list of the most torrented TV shows of 2012, with several sci-fi and fantasy shows making the cut, along with the typical hits.

An individual episode of Game of Thrones was pirated at least 4.28 million times, beating out No. 2 Dexter and The Big Bang Theory at third. Fellow sci-fi series The Walking Dead ranked sixth, with Fringe and Revolution rounding out the top 10.

What do you think about pirating television shows? Do you do it?
