With Warner Bros. developing a new Critters digital series, one aspiring director has decided to make his own short film as a pitch reel. It’s actually pretty good.
Though many view the 1986 sci-fi flick as a knockoff of Gremlins, fans argue Critters is an excellent film in its own right, and the studio is hoping to cash in on that lingering fan love with a new digital series. We have no clue what direction they’ll take the franchise, or which creative team will lead the revival, but super-fan Jordan Downey is making a hard push to get his foot in the door.
Downey spent the past two months filming his 6+ minute short film, which focuses on a sci-fi bounty hunter trying to track down the namesake little, ahem, critters. It looks good, especially considering that they shot it on a shoestring budget, and the practical effects are also solid.
We’re not quite sure it's good enough to get Downey a foot in the door at Warner Bros., but if nothing else, it’s a nice showing — and a reminder that there’s still a lot of goodwill out there to see the series revived.
