We’re back with this week’s newest edition of Who Won the Week, and the 90th Academy Award nominations announced earlier this week pretty much dominated genre news. But we also have to give credit to Star Trek: Discovery, as a popular fan theory turned out to be right on the money during Sunday night's episode.
SYFY WIRE’s Jackie Jennings and Who Won the Week podcast host Dany Roth joined forces to delve into the week of January 22-26, 2018, and take a look back at some of the biggest happenings in fandom.
Fans of Star Trek: Discovery pretty much felt vindicated (there must have been a lot of fist-pumping happening) when the theory Show Spoiler that Captain Lorca (Jason Isaacs) was actually from the Mirror Universe, where the crew of the USS Discovery is now stranded, proved out to be true.
As for the Oscars, Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water received a whopping 13 nominations, including Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Director for del Toro, Best Actress for Sally Hawkins, and more. That actually ties the film with The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring for most Academy Award nominations for a fantasy movie.
Jordan Peele’s little horror flick Get Out also stood out with noms for Best Movie, Best Actor for Daniel Kaluuya, and Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Peele. On the other hand, Wonder Woman was completely shut out of the Oscar race, even excluding Patty Jenkins from a Best Directing nod. At least Logan received a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, though.
How about you? What do you think won the week?
