Earlier today, we told you that Samuel L. Jackson was getting ready to screen-test with five actresses on Friday for the role of Nick Fury's new "sidekick" in director Joss Whedon's The Avengers. We now know the names of FOUR of those five actresses.

The Hollywood reporter has revealed the names of the four women on Marvel's short list for the role of the as-of-yet-unnamed-sidekick to Jackson's Col. Nick Fury. (Speculation goes from Janet Van Dyne/The Wasp to Carol Danvers /Ms. Marvel, but nothing's been revealed yet. Maybe she'll even be a new character.)

And since we don't have many details (besides being ''a key member of the espionage agency'' run by Fury) about the role one of these actresses may end up playing, it's a bit hard to tell who would be THE best for it. But anyway—here are the women.

Morena Baccarin

Resume: Firefly, Serenity, Stargate SG-1, V

She may be the most recognizable face to sci-fi viewers. Baccarin, who was once touted as being the perfect Wonder Woman way back when Joss Whedon was on board the project, could add flair to the role and give Scarlett Johansson some healthy competition in the ass-kicking department. She also has the edge, having worked with Whedon before.

Jessica Lucas

Resume: Cloverfield, Melrose Place

She may be the least known actress to the sci-fi audience, though she was in J.J. Abrams' Cloverfield. She will next be seen in ... Big Momma's House 3.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Resume: Live Free or Die Hard, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, The Thing (upcoming)

Winstead starred as Ramona Flowers in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and we'll see her next in the prequel to John Carpenter's The Thing. Winstead's name has popped up for other comic-book-related roles, including that of Gwen Stacy in the Spider-Man reboot (which went to Emma Stone). Could this finally be it for her?

Cobie Smulders

Resume: Andromeda, How I Met your Mother

Best known for her comedy work on CBS' How I Met Your Mother as Robin Scherbatsky, the Canadian actress could find her big break here. We all know she can be completely hilarious—but can she do the ass-kicking and be dramatic? (OK ... as dramatic as a comic-book movie can be).

What do you think? Which of these four actresses would you like to see in The Avengers? Or would you prefer someone else for the role?
