After finally making his passion project District 9, director Neill Blomkamp followed it up with the big-budget sci-fi flick Elysium, which is currently in development. But what about a sequel to his 2009 alien classic?

Though he’s been linked to a ton of high-profile projects, Blomkamp has kept his schedule pretty open. When asked if he’d like to make a sequel to District 9, as opposed to playing in someone else’s sandbox, the director sounded genuinely excited to return to the franchise that put him on the map.

Here’s what he told /Film about his thoughts on a sequel:

“In terms of sequels to my own stuff, a lot of it just comes down to if there’s more to say. And I think the world of District 9 has a lot of very interesting race and oppression-based ideas that I would still like to explore in that world. Again, I have zero problems, I’ll make my own stuff or whatever you want to call it, sequalize my own stuff.”

Considering the extremely deep world that Blomkamp developed with District 9, you’d have to think there are still a ton of great stories left to tell. The first film was one of the most unique sci-fi flicks of the decade, and it’d be great to see what Blomkamp could do now that he has a little more experience under his belt.

What do you think? Would you like to see a sequel to District 9?
