Why Olivia Munn turned down Deadpool to play Psylocke in X-Men: Apocalypse

Olivia Munn is all set to wow us as the telepathic sword-wielding mutant Betsy Braddock, aka Psylocke, in director Bryan Singer’s upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, but did you know that she was offered a role in this year’s breakout comic book hit, Deadpool

Yep. That’s what the actress revealed in a new interview with American Way Magazine.

Munn said she was offered the role of Vanessa, Wade Wilson’s (Ryan Reynolds) lady love in 20th Century Fox's R-rated movie starring everyone’s favorite fourth-wall-breaking Merc With a Mouth. Of course, the role ended up being played by Firefly and Gotham actress Morena Baccarin, who did do a bang-up job.

But why did Munn turn it down? First off, she didn’t want to play the girlfriend again, so that ruled out Deadpool, and she wanted to have some fight scenes. So, even though the X-Men: Apocalypse (also at Fox) filmmakers told her she wouldn’t have a lot of dialogue -- although she would have “an important presence” -- she was fine with that fact as long as she could kick some Grade A Butt.

“I said, ‘Is there a fight scene? I thought Psylocke was always one of the most lethal characters, and I said, ‘Yes, as long as you’re not using her to be the eye candy. She has really powerful abilities.’ And they said, ‘Yes, that’s an important part.’ ”

There you have it. Are you looking forward to seeing Olivia Munn as Psylocke in X-Men: Apocalypse when it opens May 27?
