Elizabeth Olsen has revealed the reason why Scarlet Witch and her twin brother, Quicksilver, will be gunning for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Avengers: Age of Ultron. And it has everything to do with our favorite genius billionaire playboy philanthropist: Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.). Surprised much?
Looks like Tony’s not-so-glorious past as a weapons manufacturer will come back to bite him in the butt in the upcoming comic-book movie, because this is going to be the main reason why Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Scarlet Witch (Olsen) will unleash their mighty wrath — as well as their Inhuman super powers — on the Avengers. Elizabeth Olsen explained:
“Our characters have a lot of anger, especially towards Tony Stark, and we want revenge,” said Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Scarlet Witch in the film, during an interview with Digital Spy. “We meet Ultron, and he's someone who preaches peace and...believes what we believe, which is that the Avengers create destruction and that Tony Stark's bomb is responsible for killing our parents.”
Age of Ultron Executive Producer Jeremy Latcham added:
“The story that Joss put together with these two kids is really sweet and poignant, and you really understand why they would start on this side of the line. It's a great journey that they go on, from being these rough and tumble kids in Eastern Europe who blame the West, and the Avengers for the plight, the power structure of the world that keeps kids like them down. Over the course of it they realize maybe the Avengers are here for good reason.”
It won’t be surprising to learn that the Twins’ alliance with Ultron will turn bad (since the two will become full-fledged members of the Avengers), and Olsen reveals that:
“My character ends up really having to deal with her ignorance. A lot of problems that happen towards the end of the film are her responsibility.”
What do you guys think of the Twins' motivation for totally hating on the Avengers? Does Tony deserve a bit of a comeuppance for his past as a weapons manufacturer? Are you as intrigued as we are by what problems Scarlet Witch will cause?
Directed by Joss Whedon, Avengers: Age of Ultron will hit theaters on May 1.
