Why Whedon says he's saving Thanos for Marvel's 'big finale'

Don’t ever say that Joss Whedon doesn’t have a plan. The Avengers director used a half-dozen superhero movies as a jumping-off point to make one of the biggest hits in box-office history, and he’s already looking a few movies down the line at how it’s all going to end.

Whedon had a hand in pretty much everything coming in Phase 2, and he’s already prepping Avengers 2. But how do you top a full-scale alien invasion of New York City? You use the even bigger baddie teased in the post-credit scene.

The Avengers took the biggest step yet in establishing the shared Marvel universe and set up the infamous intergalactic baddie Thanos as an evil force pulling a lot of Loki’s strings. Now Whedon is teasing the endgame that will finally give Thanos the spotlight he deserves.

Here’s what he had to say when asked by Desde Hollywood what he plans to do with the Mad Titan:

"Thanos is more powerful. He's not someone you just trot out and punch him. Like you did in the comics, you want him to be threading through the universe and to save the big finale for the big finale. He's definitely a part of what I've got going on. The thing about The Avengers is, that they are very powerful, but they aren't very stable. There'll definitely be some people who are gonna shake them up in the next installment!"

Now, the question remains: Is Thanos the Big Bad of Avengers 2, or is Whedon teasing even further down the line, looking at Phase 3? We have no idea, but we’re dying to find out.

When do you think we’ll see Thanos again?
