Why Zoe Saldana nearly turned down Star Trek (Hint: Blame Avatar)

Zoe Saldana’s turn as Uhura in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek was one of the best things about the modern-day revival, but it turns out she almost turned down the role because of another massive sci-fi epic.

Having just signed on for a key role in James Cameron’s eventual blockbuster Avatar, Saldana was getting pretty nervous about making gigantic tentpoles, and almost backed out of Star Trek because she didn’t want to do two huge flicks back to back.

Luckily for all of us, cooler heads (namely her friends and management) prevailed.

Saldana told Vibe about the near miss in a recent interview:

“I think I was just a little beside myself because after the treat and the gift of booking Avatar and being in the middle of shooting, to be able to then do another great movie with another great filmmaker back to back – I was a little overwhelmed and I thought: ‘Maybe I should just take some time off and focus and just rest?’

My team was like, ‘Zoe, are you stupid? Don’t let fear immobilize you. This is an amazing opportunity to step into the shoes of an iconic character in an iconic series and it’s in space and you’re a sci-fi buff.’ And I was like, ‘Oh my God, who am I kidding?’”

Did you think Saldana was a worthy successor to Uhura? Are you glad she opted to do both films, instead of just one?
