Firefly Online is a much-anticipated MMO based on the Firefly 'verse that we oh-so-briefly knew and loved in 2002, then blissfully revisited in 2005. After a few starts and stops, it looks as if we'll finally be taking our own fireflies out for a spin in spring 2015. More evidence that we'll be hanging out with Mal and the crew again? Wil Wheaton has just announced he'll be providing the voice of the main male character.
According to Wheaton's blog, the game's PR wrote, "Wil Wheaton has joined the FFO voiceover team and will be playing the part of you -- that is, he will be giving voice to the male player character. We couldn’t be more excited that Wil is taking on this huge part. (There’s lots of Chinese cursing too!)"
In Firefly Online, players will get to choose whether they play a male or female captain, and there are no announcements as to who is voicing the female lead. However, Wheaton fans will likely want to create a male captain, if only to hear him sweet-talk his way out of certain death.
Wil Wheaton's character on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Wesley Crusher, was so intensely disliked that Usenet (the Internet before the Internet) had two newsgroups dedicated to crushing Crusher: alt.wesley.crusher.die.die.die and alt.ensign.wesley.die.die.die. But Wheaton turned fan perception around with his writing, his love of gaming and a second-wind career playing evil geeks (Big Bang Theory, The Guild, Eureka). He's been a delight to listen to, read and watch over the years.
This won't be Wheaton's first experience voicing videogames. Credits include Grand Theft Auto IV, EverQuest II, Fallout New Vegas and DC Universe Online. He is currently the host of Tabletop, a Geek & Sundry Web series about board games.
