Nintendo's profit margins have increased by 500% thanks to the company's introduction of the Switch last March. That's an insane increase, but it was a total genius move for the gaming company that's given us Mario, Donkey Kong, and Zelda. Tapping into today's on-the-move mindset while also allowing for a retro setup, the Nintendo Switch is a great mix of old and new. It doesn't hurt that compatible games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey are both amazing in terms of gameplay, story, and design.
When one company changes the game (quite literally), you just know that competitors aren't far behind in trying to come up with the next big thing. While he didn't exactly say that Sony is working on its own version of a Switch-like device for the PlayStation, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO John Kodera definitely hinted that they've got something up their sleeve.
“In my opinion, rather than separating portable gaming from consoles, it’s necessary to continue thinking of it (portable gaming) as one method to deliver more gaming experiences and exploring what our customers want from portable,” he said at a roundtable interview in Tokyo, reports Bloomberg. “We want to think about many options.”
Obviously, that's a very ambiguous blanket statement, but it would be foolish to rule out the idea that they're currently working hard to top the Switch in some way that revolutionizes the portable gaming experience yet again. Even if it's similar to the Switch, PlayStation needs something new. Its last handheld console was the Vita in 2012, which was basically a sleeker version of the PlayStation Portable. Nevertheless, the company has got years of experience in the world of video games and consoles to come up with something unique.
“We’ll be leveraging the knowledge and experience of having built four generations of consoles,” Kodera said.
This week, Kodera also reportedly announced that the PlayStation 4 would be entering its "final phase" and that the company's financial gains will no longer come from physical consoles, but from “recurring revenue via membership services." In other words, disks are now a thing of the past, as digital downloads become the supreme medium for game purchases. It's the next logical step in the evolution of cartridges, to disks, to DLC. You no longer have to blow the dust out of a boxy cartridge or worry about scratching a delicate disk.
