With all the new projects, pilots and productions erupting from Netflix, you might assume the world was on an infinite time loop where human beings could binge-watch their streaming content until our warm sun explodes.

Their latest offering is Bright, a strange genre-mashing feature from Suicide Squad's David Ayer that imagines a universe where homo sapiens exist alongside fairies, goblins, orcs, sprites and pixies.

Ayer might seem like an unlikely choice for this material, but when you recall he co-wrote Training Day and directed End of Watch and the underappreciated Street Kings, this might end up being an oddball movie that defies convention and pleases discriminating audiences.

Here's the official synopsis:

Set in an alternate present-day where humans, orcs, elves, and fairies have been co-existing since the beginning of time. Bright is genre-bending action movie that follows two cops from very different backgrounds. Ward (Will Smith) and Jakoby (Joel Edgerton) embark on a routine patrol night and encounter a darkness that will ultimately alter the future and their world as they know it.

Here's the first set of images via Entertainment Weekly from this freaky crime film featuring Will Smith and a near-unrecognizable Joel Edgerton investigating some dark disturbances. Have a look and tell us if this weird Alien Nation-ish movie interests your more exotic sensibilities.

Written by Max Landis (Chronicle) and also starring Noomi Rapace, Lucy Fry, Edgar Ramirez, Margaret Cho, and Ike Barinholtz, David Ayer's Bright illuminates Netflix in December.
