WIRE Buzz: Ratched lobotomizes final trailer; Wolfwalkers teaser; and Fortnite concert series

By Josh Weiss
Netflix

Sarah Paulson is here to scramble our brains with an ice pick in the final trailer for Netflix's upcoming Ratched series.

Inspired by One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, the TV show (executive produced by Ryan Murphy) explores the origins of the sadistic mental asylum nurse who will one day torment Randle Patrick McMurphy. The latest round of unsettling footage, which clocks in at three minutes, gives us a glimpse into the childhood of Paulson's character, who begins her medical career at a facility in Northern California two years after the end of World War II.

Once there, Ms. Ratched is introduced to the lobotomy, a revolutionary new procedure that is said to cure "ailments" of the mind like mania and same sex attraction. The deftly-executed matched action of the pain-happy nurse driving a spike into a person's forehead before biting into a crunchy peach a moment later is the stuff nightmares are made of.

Watch now:

Created by Evan Romansky, Ratched co-stars Cynthia Nixon ("Gwendolyn Briggs") Judy Davis ("Nurse Betsy Bucket"), Charlie Carver ("Huck"), Alice Englert ("Dolly"), Amanda Plummer ("Louise"), Corey Stoll ("Charles Wainwright"), Sophie Okonedo ("Charlotte Wells"), Brandon Flynn ("Henry Osgood"), and Vincent D’Onofrio ("Gov. George Wilburn").

Paulson and Murphy (known for their long-running collaboration on American Horror Story) produce the series alongside Ian Brennan, Alexis Martin Woodall, Aleen Keshishian, Jacob Epstein, Jennifer Salt, Margaret Riley, Michael Douglas, Robert Mitas and Tim Minear.

Ratched will check into the cuckoo's nest when Season 1 drops on Netflix Friday, Sep. 18.

Unleash your inner lupine self with the first teaser trailer for Wolfwalkers, a new animated film coming to Apple TV+ in the near future.

Set in an age of superstition and magic, the movie follows Robyn Goodfellowe, a young hunting apprentice who heads to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last wolf pack in existence. Exploring the enchanted forest outside the city walls, Robyn encounters Mebh, member of fabled and mysterious Wolfwalkers, a tribe of people that can transform into wolves at night. As the duo searches for Mebh's missing mother, Robyn risks becoming the very thing her father has sworn to destroy.

Take a look at the almost dream-like (and Over the Garden Wall-esque) animation below:

Directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart, Wolfwalkers features the voices of Honor Kneafsey, Eva Whittaker, and Sean Bean. The project hails from Cartoon Saloon and Melusine Productions, the two companies behind the Oscar-nominated Song of the Sea.

No premiere date has been fixed just yet. Learn more here.

Fortnite has announced a new "Spotlight" concert series headlined by Dominic Fike.

"From our brand-new, state of the art studio in Los Angeles, CA, we’re spinning up a new live concert series in Party Royale. Get ready for Spotlight!" reads the release. The virtual event will be held this coming Saturday (Sep. 12) at 5:00 p.m. EST. Two encore presentations are scheduled for later in the evening (11:00 p.m. EST) and the afternoon of Sunday, Sep. 13 (1:00 p.m. EST).

You'll be able to show up to the Main Stage in style because the Fike performance comes with "the debut of the all-new Outfit, Shimmer. Or break out of your shell and flock to the dance with Tender Defender’s return to the Item Shop. It’s the perfect look for when Dominic performs his mega-hit, 'Chicken Tenders.'"

More artists will be announced in the coming weeks, although the release teases players by asking them to mark their calendars for the following two Saturdays: Sep. 19 and Sep. 26.

Following a recent dispute over changes to in-game currency, Apple is not listed on the devices that support Party Royale:  Android, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
