Today is Sir Ridley Scott's 79th birthday, and to share the celebration with fans, 20th Century Fox released this new image of Scott on the gloomy set of Alien: Covenant, with the iconic shape of an engineer in full Space Jockey mode in the background. Since the original 1979 Space Jockey seen petrified in his command chair was most likely marooned on LV-426 for centuries, this is probably a different alien pilot, possibly on the Engineer's home planet or bound for some innocent world to dump a cargo-hold load of black goo and egg pods on an unsuspecting population. The galactic forecast could call for "Cloudy with a chance of extermination."
This week the Directors Guild of America announced they will bestow their Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Achievement in Motion Picture Direction upon Scott during a ceremony at the 69th Annual DGA Awards on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017. Not a bad birthday gift!
“Masterful in any genre, Ridley’s groundbreaking methods and peerless directing instincts have brought to life some of the most memorable films of our time, capturing the resilience of the human spirit and captivating the hearts and minds of audiences around the world,” said DGA President Paris Barclay. “Stunning visuals, immersive worlds and powerful performances underpin his diverse body of work which ranges from ‘Alien,’ ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘Thelma & Louise’ to ‘Gladiator,’ ‘Black Hawk Down,’ and, most recently, ‘The Martian.’ Over the course of four decades, his trailblazing career has demonstrated the impact and importance of the director’s singular vision. For these reasons, and so many more, we are honored to present the Lifetime Achievement Award in feature film to Ridley Scott.”
20th Century Fox's Alien: Covenant invades theaters on May 19, 2017.
