It seems like everyone wants to go to Fantasy Island. Real life is hard, it makes sense that actors want to take a vacation on Blumhouse and director Jeff Wadlow’s adaptation of the ‘70s series. The latest to browse flights to the supernatural paradise is Dave Bautista, whose marketability has remained unchanged (or even escalated) after his rousing defense of embattled director James Gunn.
Bautista is currently in negotiations to join the film, The Hollywood Reporter writes, where he could join the “Westworld meets Cabin in the Woods” vibe alongside Michael Peña and Jimmy O. Yang. in the Wadlow, Chris Roach, and Jillian Jacobs-penned film.
The actor’s potential character is one that a bitter, trapped inhabitant of the island that used to be a guest...until the geographical monkey paw screwed him over. Now he wants to expose its leader and the island’s dark mysteries.
That’s some meaty second-lead action for Bautista, whose breakout role as Drax the Destroyer in the Guardians of the Galaxy films has led to his casting in the James Bond, Blade Runner, and Escape Plan franchises. And maybe, if he plays his cards right, he could even join the Suicide Squad.
Everything’s coming up Bautista as the former wrestler moves away from roles based solely on his physicality while staying deliciously in the middle of genre films. No petitions are needed to keep him around, but we’re happy he is.
