Wolverine opens in first place with $87M

Despite the Internet leak several weeks ago of a nearly complete version of the movie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine topped the May 1 weekend box office with an estimated $87 million in ticket sales domestically, the Reuters news service reported.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, meanwhile, opened in second place, with $15.3 million, according to studio estimates.

The animated Battle for Terra, by contrast, debuted in 12th place, taking in just $1.06 million, BoxOfficeMojo.com reported.

17 Again dropped to fourth place from second, with $6.3 million for the weekend and a total so far of $48.5 million.

Monsters vs. Aliens actually rose a slot, to fifth place from sixth, raising its total to $182.4 million.

Wolverine is considered the first of several blockbusters to open this summer; Star Trek opens next Friday.
