As all of us with a Twitter account are well aware, some men are out there having a whole lot of feelings. Feelings about childhoods being ruined by Daisy Ridley, feelings about "our Black Panther" (literal lol) Ready Player One, and probably some feelings about this very article. The rest of us roll our eyes because, obviously, white cis males remain the most represented demographic in all media.
But this year, in terms of box office wins, we are witnessing the beginnings of a shift.
The only film led by a white male to top the box office thus far this year was Maze Runner: The Death Cure, starring Dylan O'Brien. Valentine's Day weekend was dominated by Dakota Johnson and Fifty Shades Freed.
Every other weekend has been won by films led by a person or multiple people of color—Jumanji, Black Panther, A Wrinkle in Time, and this week Pacific Rim Uprising, starring John Boyega. Nearly a quarter of the entire 2018 box office has been from Black Panther, a film that wholly centers black talent onscreen and behind the scenes.
If the Hollywood powers that be have any sense, they are recognizing that films don't need a white male lead to make bank. There are far more stories to tell.
