Wonder Woman celebrates its Blu-ray release with an amazing drone show over the L.A. sky

Wonder Woman is available digitally, but next week the film will celebrate its Blu-ray release. Every blockbuster, even the minor ones, gets some kind of amusing promotional campaign in the lead-up to its home media release. Since this is the long-awaited first solo film for the most recognizable female superhero of all time, though, Warner Bros. needed to bring its A game.

Well, if you were in Los Angeles Thursday night, you might have seen what that looks like.

The studio partnered with Intel's drone team to send 300 drones into the night sky, using software to coordinate a dazzling show. The team choreographed the drones to shape the iconic Wonder Woman logo, spell out "WONDER WOMAN," and even form the shape of Diana of Themyscira kneeling with sword in hand. Director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot both tweeted videos of the event.

Yes, this is all very much in the service of advertising. It's also very indicative of just how big Wonder Woman's success is. You expect the TV ads and the online banners. You don't necessarily expect a light show, and an intensely coordinated one at that. This release isn't just another home media rollout. As Diana's star continues to rise, it feels like a coronation.

Wonder Woman hits Blu-ray on Tuesday.
