Following its debut at San Diego Comic-Con, Amazon Studios and Roadside Attractions have dropped the first magical trailer for Wonderstruck, the upcoming YA movie based on Brian Selznick’s (Hugo) beloved 2011 novel.

Adapted by Selznick himself, the movie, directed by Todd Haynes, stars Oakes Fegley (Pete’s Dragon), Julianne Moore (Far From Heaven), Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine), and Millicent Simmonds in her film debut.

The storyline follows two kids from two different time periods: a boy named Ben (Fegley) in 1977 and Rose (Simmonds), a girl who lives in 1927. It’s the first family-friendly movie from Todd Haynes, who gave us much more adult fare with Velvet Goldmine, I’m Not There, Far From Heaven, Carol and HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce. Check out the synopsis:

Based on Brian Selznick’s critically-acclaimed novel, Ben and Rose are children from two different eras who secretly wish their lives were different. Ben longs for the father he has never known, while Rose dreams of a mysterious actress whose life she chronicles in a scrapbook. When Ben discovers a puzzling clue in his home and Rose reads an enticing headline in the newspaper, both children set out on quests to find what they are missing that unfold with mesmerizing symmetry.

Wonderstruck will open in movie theaters on Oct. 20.
