If you thought Netflix's Maniac looked absolutely nuts from all the earlier trailers, then you have to check out the latest ad for the upcoming psychological dark comedy series.
Framed as an ad for Neberdine Pharmaceutical Biotech, the new spot is meant to promote an experimental procedure known as the U.L.P., which is faster than therapy and can supposedly fix depression, teeth-griding, anxiety, PTSD, body dysmorphia, hypo-active sexual desire, and a whole litany of other psychological issues in just three days.
Hosted by Dr. James K. Mantleray (Justin Theroux) and Dr. Robert Muramoto (Rome Kanda), the commercial is wholly creepy and chock full of bad acting and outdated effects that look like they belong in the late '80s and early '90s.
Watch the spot below and make sure to turn the volume down if you're wearing headphones!!! We can't stress that enough.
Based on the Norwegian series of the same name, Maniac revolves around Annie Landsberg (Emma Stone) and Owen Milgrim (Jonah Hill), who partake in Mantleray's mind games in an effort to fix the issues in their own lives.
However, as the mental pharmaceutical test progresses, Annie and Owen's consciousnesses become more and more intertwined, an eventuality that should not happen during the U.L.P.
Season 1 of Maniac drops on Netflix this Friday, Sep. 21. Expect to see Sally Field, Julia Garner, Gabriel Byrne, Selenis Leyva and Billy Magnussen to pop up during the episodes, all of which were directed by Cary Fukunaga.
