If Ronald D. Moore had gotten his way, the final few seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation would’ve played out very differently. One of the biggest changes? Moore pitched a storyline to kill Cmdr. Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes), and it almost happened.

With the Next Generation season-three Blu-ray set finally here, Ain’t It Cool News has taken the time to dig through the mountain of special features and compile 100 awesome factoids from arguably the greatest Trek show in history.

It turns out that in season six, Moore (who would go on to reboot Battlestar Galactica) developed a storyline to kill off Riker and permanently replace him with his doppelganger Tom Riker, who was created during a transporter error.

Moore argued the storyline would revitalize the series and offer a chance to “reinvent the character,” but producer Michael Piller hated the idea and killed it in the writers room. It’s crazy to think the impact that plot twist could’ve had on the show, and it’s just one of many “what-ifs” that have surfaced in the myriad special features.

Head over to Ain’t It Cool News to check out the full rundown. It’s well worth a read.
