WTF: Studio developing gritty, Viking origin story for ... Santa Claus?

Batman. Superman … Santa Claus? It seems like everyone is getting a gritty origin story these days, and now ol’ Saint Nick is next.

Sony Universal won a bidding war for Winter’s Knight, a Viking-tinged story about Santa Claus likened to the recent mashup hit Snow White and the Huntsman. The narrative is inspired by L. Frank Baum’s 1902 book The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus, an almost mythical take on Santa’s origin after he is found and raised by the immortals in the Forest of Burzee.

So, before he was sneaking down your chimney delivering toys, he was actually growing up Viking-style. OK? The script was penned by newcomers Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton, and Sony paid a cool $1 million for it. So you’d have to think it’s pretty good.

Obviously, this sounds kind of odd, but we’d be lying if we said we weren’t intrigued. If nothing else, we want at least to hear a bit more about this project, as crazy as it sounds.

What do you think? Could this be a good idea?
