One of the most terrifying horror comics in recent years was unquestionably Scott Snyder and Jock’s Image Comics series Wytches.
It starred a young woman named Sailor, whose true nature as a witch—a much scarier kind than the ones with the pointy hats—was just beginning to emerge. The first six-issue series ended with a spine-tingling cliffhanger back in May of 2015, and sadly, the series has been gone ever since. Snyder and Jock recently teamed up for a couple issues of All-Star Batman, but no one knew if that meant anything for the future of Wytches.
Well, now we know.
Beginning this August, the next chapter of Wytches will be serialized in IMAGE+, which will be starting its second volume. For those unfamiliar, IMAGE+ is the publisher’s stellar promotional magazine that runs interviews and preview for their upcoming books, as well as essays and, of course, comics. The magazine was previously home to a Walking Dead strip, which Wytches will presumable be taking the place of.
The new volume of IMAGE+ will be 80 pages an issue and only $1.99, or free with a Diamond Previews catalog, which the magazine ships with to comic stores. In addition to Wytches, Image also announced an autobiographical strip from cartoonist Ed Piskor for the issue, entitled Image of Youth.
As I said at the beginning, Wytches is simply top-notch horror, with an inventive and chilling story, and feverish, emotive artwork, so if you’re a horror buff who hasn’t read it, track down the first volume immediately. If you have read it, then I’ll be seeing you in August at the comic shop, picking up the new IMAGE+, and finding out what the heck happened to Sailor!
