If you need a little refresher on who the X-Force is in the first place, we’ve got you covered. But for everyone else, it should come as no surprise that the squad’s first live-action movie is likely getting an R rating and will have all the sex, violence, and silliness one would expect from the Deadpool-skewed militarized mutant force. It’s just icing that Deadpool 2 co-writer Rhett Reese confirmed as much for CBR.

Speaking about Deadpool 2 and the legacy this oddball franchise will have on future films, Reese was asked about the upcoming X-Force. “They can get their hands dirty a little bit,”  Reese said. “There’s more gray area. It’ll be raunchier, it’ll be rated R, I’m sure. We’ll get to see an ensemble movie that’s pushed, hopefully, as far as the Deadpool individual movie was pushed.” The full interview is below:

Since there’ve only been a handful of R-rated superhero movies in the fad’s history -- including Logan, Kick-Ass, and the first Deadpool -- this move would be both a show of confidence in the film’s ability to generate an audience despite cutting off part of the tried-and-true superhero fanbase (kids) and a shift in superhero storytelling to be more adult-oriented (even if it’s just in its jokes).

With Cable and Deadpool in the fray -- two ethically ambiguous characters if ever there were any -- the hard R from the MPAA shouldn’t be a surprise content-wise, but it’s still a pleasant show of faith from the studio behind X-Force.
