There have been more than a few X-Men cartoons over the past decade or so, but all pale in comparison to X-Men: The Animated Series — the 1990s hit that spawned an entire generation of Marvel fans.

Though the comic publisher has been dabbling with a revival of that universe in comic form recently, fans wanting something a bit more animated have been out of luck. Until now. X-Men: Danger Room Protocols, a new animated web series from video-game animator Joel Furtado, aims to revisit that distinctive look and feel with his new 18-episode project. Each episode of the series will basically team up two mutants and pit them against a Danger Room scenario, which (we have to admit) is an excellent concept for the web series format.

A trailer has been released to help build some buzz for the Jan. 19 premiere (assuming Fox or Marvel doesn’t shut him down, of course). The project looks like it could be a fun one, and Furtado’s mix of pixelation and animation looks to be the perfect fit for what he’s trying to put together. Plus: The animated series gang is back in action, even if it is unofficially.
