It seems like every studio's trying to expand its comic-book universe. Marvel's achieved great success by connecting all of its films, and now everyone else is following suit. Sony is experimenting with the Spider-Man property by giving the Sinister Six and Venom solo movies, while Fox will attempt to capitalize on the many mutants in its X-Men catalogue.
X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner recently told EW about her new outlook on the franchise. “There was a regime [at the studio] that didn’t see the worth in [spinoffs], and the current people who run Fox understand, embrace it, and we’re going to do right by it,” she said. “I’d like to do Gambit. I’d like to do Deadpool. We’ll see. There’s a lot of really great characters.”
Following X-Men Origins: Wolverine there was talk of a Deadpool movie with Ryan Reynolds, but it never got off the ground. There were also rumblings of a Magneto origin story, but that folded into what became X-Men: First Class. Considering the star power Jennifer Lawrence currently has, her incarnation of Mystique is the likeliest candidate.
According to writer and producer Simon Kinberg, “I love what Jen Lawrence has done with her, and I feel like because she is in such a crowded ensemble, there’s so much more opportunity if you were to follow her solo.”
We'd love to see more characters from the X-Men canon, but the decision should be based on the potential of the character, not just the actor ... although it's easy to understand why Fox might want to latch onto Lawrence's current status as America's sweetheart.
