For the better part of three decades, Rogue and Gambit have been one of the X-Men's most popular couples. And while the power duo recently reconciled in the Rogue & Gambit miniseries earlier this year, it hasn't exactly been smooth sailing for the lovebirds. They have been known to withhold secrets from each other, and the fact that Rogue couldn't physically touch anyone definitely got in the way of their happiness. But now things have drastically changed for the couple.
Note: We said they were X-rated because they're X-Men, not because it's porn. Sorry.
SPOILER WARNING: There are massive spoilers ahead for X-Men Gold #30, which is out in comic book stores today!
After the wedding of Kitty Pryde and Colossus fell through, Rogue and Gambit impulsively got married in front of their friends and family. Additionally, they will now headline their own ongoing series, Mr. and Mrs. X, starting next month with Kelly Thompson and Oscar Bazaldua as the creative team. To celebrate the union of these fan-favorite characters, SYFY WIRE has put together a chronological list of some of their greatest moments as a couple.
The First Flirtation
Rogue and Gambit had briefly met and interacted before X-Men #3, and the Rogue and Gambit miniseries retroactively depicted their first meeting. This moment, from the final issue of Chris Claremont's run with Jim Lee, set the stage for decades to come. Both Rogue and Gambit had been manipulated into siding with Magneto against their fellow X-Men on Earth, but their true personalities broke through when they displayed an obvious attraction to each other.
Date Night: Take 1
Lee and co-writer John Byrne didn't waste any time following up on that scene. In X-Men #4, Gambit got under Rogue's skin during a pickup basketball game with Wolverine and Jubilee. Despite that, Rogue agreed to go out on a date with Gambit. Unfortunately for him, several X-Men decided to tag along. And that was before Omega Red attacked them! This date was a bust from the start.
Date Night: Take 2
Almost two years passed before Rogue and Gambit got a real chance for another night out together. In X-Men #24, they were more emotionally open with each other and Rogue almost told Gambit her real name. That was a big deal at the time because no one knew her as "Anna-Marie." And it took a few more years before she finally let that secret out.
One Last Kiss at the End of the World
Right before the Age of Apocalypse began, the X-Men felt a profound sense of dread as the world they knew rapidly collapsed around them. In X-Men #41, Legion accidentally changed the past by killing his father, Charles Xavier. Before they were wiped from existence, Rogue grabbed Gambit for a kiss and they held each other as they faced oblivion.
Guess what? The world didn't end. The Age of Apocalypse was undone and Rogue had absorbed Gambit's memories when they kissed. Whoops!
She also held Gambit's darkest secret in her mind, but she couldn't process the information or deal with its ramifications. In X-Men #45, Rogue told Gambit that he couldn't give her anything else, so he offered everything that he had by letting her absorb his mind again. Rogue ultimately turned him down, but it was a big moment between them.
Alongside their teammates, Rogue and Gambit were held prisoners in Antarctica. But that's beside the point! The reason this moment from Uncanny X-Men #348 made the list is that the duo had been stripped of their powers as well, and they thought they were going to die. So they acted as if it was their final night on Earth. You'll just have to imagine what happened next.
This is the dark-horse pick of the list: a small scene from the end Gambit #5 that could easily be overlooked. Rogue had been kidnapped by the X-Cutioner to lure Gambit into a death trap. Gambit and Rogue narrowly made it back to Earth in one piece. But as their teammates scrambled to help their friends, their facial expressions said everything about how they felt for each other.
Control, At Last
For most of her existence, Rogue has been unable to control her powers. That changed in X-Men Legacy #225. Thanks to an assist from Charles Xavier and Danger, Rogue's fractured abilities were finally able to reach their full potential. And as a test of her newfound control, Rogue was finally able to touch Gambit without fear.
Too Much Intimacy!
By the time X-Men Legacy #234 rolled around, Rogue and Gambit weren't a couple anymore. But Rogue absorbed some telepathic powers, and she shared some of her most intimate memories with Gambit from their time together. Unfortunately, she also shared them with almost everyone on Utopia, which led to some awkward moments immediately afterward.
A New Beginning
The entire Rogue & Gambit miniseries was about bringing the title couple back together in a place where they could forgive each other and move forward. That was best exemplified in Rogue & Gambit #5, when Gambit helped Rogue release his memories and those of everyone else she absorbed during the story. And it was one hell of a kiss!
