Riding a motorcycle is one of the coolest things a human can do, and now research scientists at Yamaha are focusing on transferring those skills to our future robot overlords.
Dubbed Motobot, the project is essentially a very cool-looking robot man strapped on a very cool-looking motorcycle. The research is aimed at figuring out the extremely complicated math involved with riding a motorcycle safely, and how that information can translate into building safer motorcycles for human drivers. Basically, if they can figure out how to drive more efficiently, they can start building those features into new bikes.
If the project remains on track, Yamaha hopes to eventually be able to put Motobot on a regular ol’ motorcycle and let it rock around a track at 125 mph. That in itself is awesome, and working out the kinks of allowing a robot to drive a motorcycle could have far-reaching implications for everything from self-driving cars to new safety features.
