If you can’t think of anything you’d rather do today than sit in your old childhood room and play with all the toys that once made you happy, than Netflix has got a perfect new documentary series for you: The Toys That Made Us.
Obviously, the new eight-part series, which debuts this week, will benefit greatly from nostalgia, as who among us wouldn’t want to catch up with all our old plastic mates for an evening or eight, even if only via video? And the show will focus on some of our favorites, too, specifically toys from Star Wars, Barbie, G.I. Joe, He-Man, Transformers, Hello Kitty, Star Trek, and LEGO. Each episode will feature one particular toy.

Beyond just gawking at action figures, the series also highlights the very real business of toys. Think about this bit from the trailer for just second: Before The Last Jedi (presumably), the Star Wars films made some $7 billion at the box office, while the toys collected nearly twice that amount. Yeah, that’s big business.
“The show’s primary focus is on the people who had the ideas and involvement with the toys we all grew up with. We did not touch too much on the buyers or sellers,” said series creator Brian Volkweiss, in a chat with Toy News International.
That’s not to say collectors aren’t represented, though, as you can clearly see they interviewed our old friend Steve Sansweet, CEO and President at Rancho Obi-Wan, home of the biggest collection of Star Wars goodies around.
