We're still more than a month away from the release of IT, the new adaptation of Stephen King's massive horror opus by director Andres Muschietti. Thanks to San Diego Comic-Con, though, the marketing push for the film has new energy, and the new trailer that was promised to us earlier this week is finally here.
Driven by the chanting tagline "You'll float too," one of Pennywise's (Bill Skarsgard) favorite phrases for courting his future victims, this trailer is just relentlessly creepy. It builds at least three times to a moment of amazing tension, only to release it with the best looks at Pennywise we've seen so far. The main intent of this trailer seems to be conveying the idea that Pennywise is everywhere, and while the film so far hasn't shown us much of his shapeshifting abilities, it's clear his clown form is hanging over the town of Derry like a plague. He's in the sewers, in the basements, in historical photos, and basically everywhere the Losers Club looks. As Mike (Chosen Jacobs), the future historian of the group, puts it, the town is cursed, and Pennywise is the embodiment of that curse. He's not something you can outrun. As Bill Denborough (Jaeden Lieberher) tells his friends in this trailer: Their only choice is to stand and fight.
Besides the simple horror of the footage, the attention to detail Muschietti seems to have packed into these frames is really encouraging. The little paper boat floating down the rain gutter is perfect, as are each of the Losers themselves. It was particularly thrilling to see moments like Mike panicking as dozens of tiny hands reach for him (one of the creepiest moments in King's novel) and Beverly's (Sophia Lillis) face engulfed as her bathroom sink explodes with blood. Then there's that final scare as Richie (Finn Wolfhard) finds himself quite literally surrounded by creepy clowns. Is he only supposed to be scared of one, or all?
IT arrives September 8. Check out the trailer below.
