Earlier this year, a few unauthorized pictures from the set of Shazam! revealed the first glimpse of Zachary Levi’s superhero costume for the upcoming adaptation of the DC adaptation. To say that some fans were unhappy with it would be an understatement. “Crap” was one of the tamer words used to describe the outfit, and Levi quickly asked fans to give it “a fair shake” before passing judgment. Now, Levi is offering a better view of his Shazam! Costume in the first official artwork from the film.
Ahead of this week’s Licensing Expo in Las Vegas, Levi posed in front of a Shazam! promotional image that features the hero enjoying a soda in a very childlike way.
That image really does capture the idea that Levi’s Shazam! is a child inside of an adult’s body. In the film, Asher Angel is playing Billy Batson, the young boy who is gifted with the powers of Shazam! and magically transformed into an adult incarnation played by Levi. The comic book was Big decades before Big was a movie. (But we’d still love to see a Tom Hanks cameo in this film!)
The Shazam! costume doesn’t appear to be a radical reinvention of the source material, although it appears that the lightning insignia may light up. It’s still not a full body image of the costume, but it seems to evoke the spirit of the hero's original look.
We may see more Shazam! images from the Licensing Expo later this week, as it won't officially open until tomorrow. Shazam! is slated to hit theaters Apr. 5, 2019.
