WARNING: If you don't want to know what happened in this episode, don't read this photo recap!
It’s a Van Helsing season finale which means no one is having a very good day and it’s only going to get worse. Mohamad starts out having everyone’s worst nightmare — getting his heart ripped out by Sam — only to wake up and discover Sam sitting right next to him. It’s unclear if the second Sam is real or not, but at this point, does it matter? Still terrifying.
Back in Denver, Doc is dealing with the fallout of her actions during the attack and there is a brand new angry bureaucrat to deal with. Thanks to some security cameras installed inside Doc’s lab, he knows exactly what she did to her last boss, and now she’s stuck.
Meanwhile, Vanessa has made it back to the Asylum for what she thinks is a final confrontation with the Dark One, only to find Sam waiting inside. The two duke it out before the Oracle arrives and tells them that they are really here because one of them is about to become the fourth Elder. There are only a few steps left in the process.
Doc has been conscripted by her new overlord to come up with a way for them to fight the Daywalkers and take back the parts of the city that have fallen. She goes for the bullets dipped in large quantities of the repellant solution. As she’s finishing up, her DNA analysis finally finishes but she is whisked from the room before she can see what it says.
Vanessa and Sam make their way into the inner sanctum under what’s under the asylum and are told by the Oracle that they both have brought their necessary Elder totems along; symbols of their pain. Sam’s is the weird teeth necklace he made as a kid. Vanessa’s? The ribbon that Dylan was wearing when she died. The next step is to kill the light inside them.
For Sam, that means Mohamad, who has more or less brought himself to his own doom. Sam isn’t exactly happy about it, but since he wants to be an Elder more than he wants to care about anyone, he stabs Mohamad.
In Denver, Julius is determined to assist with the efforts to take back the city, and to find out what happened to Frankie. Despite Doc’s pleas that he sit this fight out, he goes in anyway. He thinks he can reason with Scab, since he’s the one who made him. Either that, or perhaps he can offer himself up in exchange for everyone else.
Vanessa is not happy that Sam has killed her friend whom she just saved from being a vampire, but her troubles are about to get a lot worse. Her light has also walked herself right into this trap. Unlike Mohamad, though, Scarlett has found a purpose in her death. Everything has been leading to this point and she believes that her death will actually amplify the light in her sister. She and Axel have a tearful, reluctant goodbye before she turns to Vanessa.
First, though, a word from our sponsors. Or, really, Denver’s sponsors. The whole city is only a safe haven because of a corporation, as Doc overhears from the new boss. It seems he’s here to clean up some messes for their benefactors who will probably be a major player in a possible fourth season. For now, though, they are just a shady corporate entity.
Back at the asylum, Scarlett makes her case to Vanessa. She knows this is her destiny. It has always been the thing to which they have been moving in their lives. It has to be Vanessa who faces the Dark One and she has to do it alone, but Scarlett’s death won’t be the thing that breaks her. It will be the thing that helps her. Vanessa still won’t do it, but Scarlett takes the decision out of her hands and stabs herself with Vanessa’s hand on the blade.
Axel is understandably pissed and when the Oracle frees him he promises to kill Vanessa if he ever sees her again. The Oracle tells Vanessa that Scarlett’s sacrifice was for nothing. Her light died with Dylan. Vanessa disagrees. She will kill the Dark One. This is apparently the wrong answer as the Oracle offers Sam the position as Elder.
At the Asylum, the final confrontation between Vanessa and Sam begins and quickly moves into the crypt. Vanessa gets a few good swings in, drawing blood which hits her ancestor, Lilly, right on the face. Plot twist, that blood wakes Lilly up, and we are officially back up to two Van Helsings! Too bad we won’t find out how it all shakes out until next year.
